Good Morning !, im looking at buying a 92 mercedes 300D, the car over heated and ruined the engine,,, i Have overhauled a few gas engines b4 <5-6> , Are these diesel motors cylinders sleeved???? , what can i expect the cost < major overhaul w/ sleeves? > be? and a site to order from? also what should i check,on/off the motor that mite also have been affected?, or ?? i will check to see if the motor turns over or not < by hand > or is siezed up!, another thought is buy another older D and just swap motors, having a spare trans. radiator. etc. etc. in the older car. im in Dallas , ,thanks russ. Thanks for this site.

Russ,
I recently bought an'87 300tdt with a blown engine and face the same questions as you do. I found an engine in a local yard with a 90 day warranty for $1600.00, which is considerably less than either a rebuilt engine or a dealer supplied replacement. If your car is really clean and you want to keep it for a long time as a reliable driver, you might consider a factory rebuilt engine. Fletcher-Jones in California seems to be pretty good about its pricing. Luckily, my car runs great with the cheapo approach, but when day 91 comes, I'll be sweating it out! Good luck. |
