P0441 Evap Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow
The Check Engine Light of my C220 has come on. She has done a little over 1,00,000 miles...
I took to AAP and got a diagnostic done. It read "P0441 Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow". Can anybody help in diagnosing wots causing it...?? I hv chkd the gas cap...it seems to be fine and shut tight... Offlate I have been experiencing a couple of other problems... The brakes tend to grab when coming to a stop...the engine also surges for a second...or two...the brakes act funny only at very low speeds or when coming to a stop.... The engine emanates a knocking sound when I rev up in park or neutral or accelerate in drive...for a very short time....I dont hear that sound when I'm normally cruising....The sound is more like that of a worn connecting or crankshaft bearing....But then if thats the case shouldn't it be constant...the engine runs smooth when cruising normally...even at higher speeds.....The sound comes for a very short time... The transmission tends to hesitate a bit before changing gears.. Would adding a bottle of Trans-X help..?? ________________ 96 C220 |

Code P0 441 is related to the purge valve under-hood. Mounted next to the w/s washer reservoir. Disconnected vacuum lines are common, remove reservoir & inspect. IF all are connected then MOST likely the valve is defective. MB part number 000-470-22-93. Sits on a rubber type mount & tha "MOT" on the top.
As far as the noise, the belt tensioner has been updated & a shock absorber added as they rattle a lot at idle.

I had replaced the belt shock and tensioner recently.
The sound does not come when the engine is idling..it only when I rev it up.. The sound comes for a very short time and then stops....as you rev it up a bit more...Now as the revs go up the engine starts missing... Thats what baffling me...and now this code.... I will chk the purge valve... |

My SL320 gave me the same code, it was a loose vacuum line right at the valve. It was an easy fix, I just inspected each line, removed it, made sure there were no cracks or loose connections, replaced a rubber connector between the valve and the plastic line to the manifold and that fixed it. Regarding your rattling when revving, that sounds like a chain or tensioner. Mine did that when you would rev it up, as it went back down to idle, it was a tensioner on the chain, an easy fix as it was the upper one. I am told the chains on the inline engines last a long time because they are shorter and tend to not stretch as much, but the tensioners can be a little troublesome. Get your code fixed, and then try to locate the rattle in your engine. The idle problem you are having can be related to a vacuum loss as the ETA tries to compensate. (Purge Valve?) Good luck!

I looked around for the Purge valve...
Could not find it... Next to the w/s washer reservior all I could see is the ABS pump... The ABS pump does not tick or feel like it working even with the engine running... Is this how it is supposed to be..??? Does the ABS start working when u slam on the brakes..? Is the purge valve under the w/s reservior...?? ___________ 96 C220 |

Hello,
The ABS pump only activates if you are in panic braking. It will not be running when your engine is. The Purge Valve is usually located in front of or below the ABS pump. There is a large black plastic line that will run right into the manifold from that valve. The valve is on a rubber mount and will have an electrical connection. There is another hose running out of the other side of it that goes to the charcoal cannister. Check out our website, go to tech stuff, then click on engine technical, then click on "location of engine controls", you will see as you scroll down that there is the location and description of the purge valve. Let us know if that helps! Happy Benzing.

Hi,
I finally found the Purge valve... I checked the purge valve....found that the terminals were corroded... I cleaned the terminals...chkd the voltage at the connector..( 11.75 V) Connected and checked again...Now with the switch turned on w/o the engine started the purge valve was not operational even though there was voltage at the connectors. I started the engine and after sometime the purge valve started ticking... I shut the engine...restarted...same...The purge valve started working after some time....Is this how it suposed to be...? Or should it start working the moment you switch on the ignition? Now that the purge valve started working I went about resetting the Check Engine Light.... Tried AZ...they said they cannot...So disconnected the battery for a couple of mins...and lo and behold...the CEL was reset.. Drove the car for an hour...The light hasn't come up yet... If the fault still exists how long would it take for the CEL to come on again..?? |

Purge starts getting a freqency sig after the engine is warm. It varies in speed . You can feel it pulsing in your hand. They pulse it so the engine does not get a large gulp of air .. it is a controlled on/off vacuum.
Sometimes the valve inside gets gummed up and sticks open/closed. It can be cleaned by squirting WD in the outside port hose and letting the engine vac suck it through the valve. |

Should I spray in WD with the Engine Started..or spray WD into the Purge valve...reconnect the lines and then start the engine?

I would just spray some upstream and let the engine suck it through the valve as you drive .
If you are handy, you may want to just take it off and clean it up by soaking it from both ports and then blow the crap out with a hose and some low pressure .. even your lungs. |
