w108 engine problems
Hello guys
I am new in the forum, I have been around cars for a few years now I do my owns restorations as far as I can, by now all my experiences are over my Volkswagen but I also have another german toy a 1972 w108 280S, saddly at this moment I have to repair the engine and I am looking for help in this forum. The car is smoking and a broke head gasket, so I have to rebuild the head and replace the gasket. My main problem is what to do with the engine since this is not may daily driving and I put just a few miles a year, the mechanic sugest new rings and gaskets, another friend told me not to do that, instead he sugested to bore the cylinders and change the pistons, keeping the bottom end since there are no stranges noises and the oil presure is steady at the maximun values even at idle. What do you think about ? Thanks in advance |

You don'ttell us how many miles, but I doubt the lower end needs attention. I would probably just rework the head and replace the head gasket. Once you have the head off you can check the condition of the cylinders and if any a scored or obviously worn then explore a total rebuild.

Thanks Mike, but the car is not with me by now so I can not tell you how many miles but since I bougth the car a few years ago from a owner number XX I can be sure there are many miles on the engine.
The reason of my post is that the bottom end of the engine sounds better that my knowlege on mechanical matters, I will do the head and replace the gasket for sure, but since I am in a tight budget situation by now and I found two piston sets (first and second oversize) I was wondering if is a good idea just to hone the cylinders and replace the rings or could be a more long term rmedy if I bore the cylinders and replace the pistons (of course if the engine block allow any of this procedures) Roberto Alvarado |
