300E Oil Seal replacement

Hi everyone. A friend of mine had a oil seal replaced in his 87 300E, and we are wondering if the flywheel/flexplate has to be in a certain position on the crank for the CPS to operate properly. I know some of the later 500 & 560's have to be properly aligned. Could someone set us straight with this issue?

Thanks, and if anyone has a used fuel dist. (or 2) that actually work, we would want to talk with you asap.

Isn't the CPS on the front of the engine??

And I have a fuel distributor. I bought it but never used it so I can't speak to how well it works.

I also believe this just has the crank angle sensor mounted up front for the ignition system, it's CIS-E so it doesn't need a crankshaft position sensor, could be wrong.
I have a new CIS fuel distributor, was going to eBay it at some point, it's for an older SL though (V8)

Arrow does the flexplate/flywheel have to be in any certain order mounted on the crankshaft

My '87 260E, '88 190E and '86 300E all have a crankshaft position sensor (CPS) located at the back of the engine block....2.6 & 3.0 engines I'm talking about.

If the transmission is removed and the rear crankshaft oil seal replaced, does the flexplate/flywheel have to be in any certain order mounted on the crankshaft? I am asking people on this forum that know for sure....as I'm not 100% sure.

I currently do not own any V-8 Mercedes engines, so the FD from a V-8 won't work....but one from an inline 6 cylinder (1986 to 1993) will work.

Arrow I've been needing it for over a year.

Hey,

I've been needing it for over a year. Please tell me how long you have had it, and where it came from (junk car, etc., and how long it sat up before you got the F.D.). Where are you located?

When these F.D.'s sit up on a car, the gasoline turns to varnish and starts the clogging process, and then all you have is a good core to be rebuilt, unless you want to mic it as you take it apart and soak it in ultrasonic cleaning fluid for 10 minutes so you can rebuild it, but the diaphram in the middle is necessary for the rebuild, and I have not located a supplier yet.

Arrow This 300E has a Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS)

It seems that no one here has ever changed a rear crank seal on a 300E before....I was hoping to learn if the flexplate had to be in any special alignment with the crankshaft.

This 1987 300E has a Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS) located at the rear of the engine block, between the engine and transmission.....my 260 also has the same configuration. It tests good, just want to make sure the engine timing is correct and that it (CPS) will do it's job.

Does anyone know for sure if the flexplate has a special alignement with the crankshaft? Thanks.

The flexplate wouldn't really matter, but the flywheel would, there should be a dowel to make sure the flywheel is reinstalled in the proper position.

Use a center punch to match mark the crank and the flexplate.

if you removed the flywheel and the flexplate as one piece (I mean without disassemble the flexplate from the flywheel), then just line it up with the dowel and you should be set to go. You can't go wrong because it won't fit if you don't line it up with the dowel.

The engine was replaced, transmission was removed

I did not perform this rear oil seal job....if I did, it would have been marked.

The engine was replaced, transmission was removed, therefore the crankshaft was in place with the engine...I was wondering if there was a special alignment procedure like on the 560sel ......so, back to my original question...

Does anyone know for sure if the flexplate has a special alignement with the crankshaft (for ignition timing)?

No, not the flexplate, that is only what the torque converter bolts to. The segments that the CPS reads is on the back of the flywheel, not the flexplate. The flywheel is indexed by a dowel to the crankshaft so the segments will be in the proper position relative to the crank. Hope this (finally) helps.
