Metal to metal clunking sound.

Hello again everyone...

I have had this problem all the time with this car since we got it... (16,000miles)

I just thought about it today to get other people's opinion.

(W124 1989 300E) @ 186,800

Whenever I am moving at any speed above 10 MPH, if I suddenly let go of the accelerator, I hear this plate to plate clunk sound, it does not sound loud and annoying, it is just like when two thick ceramic plates tap each other, at least thats how I can describe it.

Soon, I plan to have the engine mounts replaced. So maybe this will cure that problem and restore the silkyness to the ride!

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

A sudden shift of force in the drivetrain will do this. My car does it and it is no big deal. When you suddenly shift from the engine driving the wheels to the wheels driving the engine, you can hear a slight clunk, especially at low speed when it is easy to hear and there is a relatively higher torque loading on the driveshaft. If you want to try to get rid of the problem, you can start by examining the flew disks on the drivetrain.

Basically, some rubber part that resists torque has given up the ghost. Where there should be rubber squeezing or stretching, there's metal hitting. Not uncommon, but very fixable. The hard part is finding which one. It would be all too easy to throw bunches of money at this and not hit the problem.

It could be an engine mount, a diff mount, a flex disk, a transmission mount. Basically, anything that holds the driveline in place. Probably a $20 part, but first you've got to find it.

Best of luck,
