new dash on w126...what to do while its off???

I am putting a new dash assembly on my 300SDL, while off I am going to install the vac. lines for the euro lamps & adujusters, and I am going to install a 4 place seat pkg from 560SEL I purchased, and need to install the wiring for the new heated & ortho seats in front and the individual power seating in the rear. I am wanting to know what else I need to look at or upgrade & or repair while its all apart. I was told that my evaporator had a leak as I keep having to recharge the a/c,guess I will need to put some dye into the system to verify. Everything seemed to blow out the apporpriate vent as set, but wanted to know what I need to look for specifically, before I put it all back to gether once its apart. Thanks in advance.

since you've asked

your car has some age so i would be doing the vaccum dash pots. you just need to replace the rubber diaphrams so it's about 40$ plus maybe the popper tool for another 12.

of course if you've already done this it wouldn't be necessary.

you didn't mention the dash but i might be convinced to change a few of the bulbs while you're in there.

I enthusiastically second the motion to install new vacuum pods.

If you have thought about installing a non factory radio, this might also be a good time to route speaker wires in there.

Other than that, just check for foam or rubber seals, or tubing, or anything else that can crack or just in general, deteriorate over time.

Have fun!

If the heater core is on that side of the firewall, I'd probably have that swapped out too. From a "customization" point of view, it would be the time to rewire the sound system and consider a stereo with AUX IN to integrate other devices. Perhaps a stealth mobile phone install. You might also want to consider installing an alarm system to protect your new dash and there are some modules that will give you the "one-touch" window opening feature for the front windows.

Also since you will probably have most of the center console out, their is a rubber boot at the bottom of the shifter. They crack and it would be a good time to change that. Mine is leaking nice cold air I need to pull the console out again and replace that stupid thing.

It would be a good idea to replace the vacuum lines while the dash is out. A good cleaning of the HVAC system as well and the blower motor.

All good ideas. There is already a custom Rockford Fosgate system in the 300SDL now, but I might be adding a Clarion JoyRide Navigation system like I have in my Suburban. I really like it, and once you get used to it, it an awesome system. and is single din so no mod's are needed for the dash.

I guess I should try and tackle the vacuum lines and pods. Didn't think about the heater core, but might as well so that it will as worry free as possible for many years.

Check the floor vent linkages!

Right floor heat OK, left floor none

Ask me how I know!

Best Regards,
Jim
