Leave it in 3 until the car shifts into 2nd, then push the lever back to 2 to hold it in 2nd.

I did this for a while, but I found it more troublesome than a full-manual, so I converted my car to stick.

Like Chamorro said, leave it in position 3 a bit longer. I suspect your transmission is getting old (aren't they all?) or the fluid needs changing, so it's just taking a bit longer for your inputs on the selector to register. Your 2-3-2 should be more like 2-3-pause-2. You'll have to experiment to get the pause just the right length so that the transmission gets the message and goes into second rather than third.

If that doesn't help, something else is wrong..

Yeah, "somewhere." I don't remember how I found out, but I know it's not in the owners manual.

Maybe we should have a secret handshake or something? "You are now a member of the Ancient Order of the 2-3-2... guard the secret well!"

Good point, I will wait a bit longer in 3rd, for now...

I already have a new filter and gasket for the trans in my possession, my mechanic (Indian uncle), is asking $60 for labor and fluid, (I requested that he use Dextron III/Mercon).

Is this the right price? I can't do this by myself, since I do not have jackstands.....

Thanks to all!
