ABS and ASR light

greetings, my sl 600 1995 has ABS and ASR lights came on after the shop changed the rear rotors and front brake hoses. Also the speedometer was moving erratically up to 40 mph when the car was in standstill. The car soft software showed that the front left ABS sensor was faulty solenoid on the rt passenger was bad. Both front speed/ABS sensor were changed but did not solved the problem. now a rescan showed that master cylinder valve was bad. what should we do now? any comments will be appreciated.

I think that model uses the ABS speed sensors to determine slippage, which would cause the ASR light to come on, so it seems that you are on the right track, however I would be unsure of throwing so many parts at it. I have had several 129's and never had a speed sensor go bad. Also have you replaced your engine wiring harness? That model if not changed needs to be, and if not it can really goof things up, a friend didn't replace his and it blew both the engine computers on his 600. Another cause of the ASR light is the ETA, those can cause the malfunction as well. As you know the ETA controls the throttle during slippage and if manlunctioning it will cause the light to come on. As for the ABS problem, that could be related, however I would start with the harness if not already replaced. If you have replaced it, then go for the master cylinder, but I have never had one of those go bad either, except I have seen them go when friends use those pressure bleeders on them. Do you change your fluid regularly? Go from there. Good luck!

Brian, thanks for the note. the wiring harness was changed 2 years ago. i change oil every 3 months(around 1500 miles). the light came on after the front brakes hoses was changed with manual bleeder, not power bleeder. any other advise will be appreciated.

Well it sounds like you take really good care of your car. I drive the heck out of mine, it has 127k on it now, but that one is a 96SL320. Have you had any other trouble with your instrument cluster? those are another known problem. If you didn't use a power bleeder your Master Cylinder should be ok. Check out our website at my signature, click on tech stuff, then engine technical, there is a whole bunch of information on the 129 chasis and the engine controls. If you don't find what you need there let me know and I will get it from Startek. Read up on it and you can diagnose it yourself. If you are using an independant mechanic who doesn't have the specific scanner to go into the connector under the hood, he won't know exactly what is wrong either. Sometimes when I get stumped I take it to Park Place, they tell me what is wrong and then I go home and do the repair, there has never been a time they were wrong. Good luck!
Best Regards,
Brian

Just a shot in the dark.... but the brake switch is a common problem, especially if the cruise control doesn't work. It's a $15 part.

True-- happened to me. It would be reasonable to go ahead and replace yours if it's not been done before since it's cheap, easily accessible, and such a common failure item.
