97 E 320 head gasket

I have 97 E 320 with 97000 miles.Last week after small accident(animal ) light damage(plastic parts),next day noticed oil marks under my car in the garage. After driving all day can smell oil, went to local MB dealer(Lincoln/Nebraska).I was told after inspection, that I have several problems, what need to be fixed and it will be cost $ 7000(!)-head,head gasket etc.I cant' believe this price.Anyone with this problem from the past?Oil leak problem will cost me half the price what I paid for this vehicle?I am not a mechanic, but this is too much,I think.Any advice or recommendation?

My 300CE is currently at an independent specialist who quoted a very reasonable £520 (inc 17% tax) to replace the head.

Problem is, the gaske is fine so I might be looking at a recon head which will clock in at more like £700. Still, whatever it takes.

Get them serviced at MB but do everything else at an independent. Discouraging to see that dealers globally are having a laugh at our expense with their prices. Seven thousand dollars? Get stuffed. I bet you could buy a half decent 300 for that over there?

You need to find a good indepedent shop. It wouldn't hurt to get two opinions if you don't have a shop that you trust. That dealer seems to be trying to get your car off the road so he can sell another new one. You haven't told us what all is included in the $7,000 but a new head gasket should be under $2,000 even at a dealer. An independent shop is more likely to be $1000 to $1500. If you are not mechanicaly inclined you will probably need to dump the car soon.
