300e clutch judder when cold

1987 300E manual, 165,000 km

I realise this may not be the best place for help, seeing as stick people are in the minority here, but I remember seeing some mention of this problem in the past but am unable to find help through searching.

Problem is I get clutch judder when I drive off first thing in the morning. Problem disappears once the car has warmed up. Other than this, no problems with the clutch or gear change.

I seem to recall a suggestion it may be due to the clutch plates being contaminated. Anyone have any more light to throw on this?

You may have read those comments in previous threads relating to my 190E. I get some shudder when the clutch is cold, particularly after the car has stood unused for several days. I had considered oil contamination although the consensus of opinion is that it would be difficult for oil leaking from the crankshaft rear main oil seal to get to the opposite side of the flywheel so as to contaminate the clutch (mine has a very slight oil leak here). I am wondering whether a slight film of rust may form on the flywheel or pressure plate in much the same way as disc brake rotors do. I know that deliberately slipping the clutch briefly is sufficient to cure the problem. I am not about to pull everything apart to find the cause of this minor annoyance. That can wait until a worn clutch or gearbox requires such work, hopefully not in the near future. There are many causes for clutch shudder and it it unlikely that any can be addressed without removing the gearbox and clutch.
