190e transmission modulator
I am wondering if anyone has an explanation why my 1992, 190e, 2.6, auto shifts hard when cold, or for the first 10 minutes driving, then shifts beutifully smooth afterward? This evnt of hard shifts happens everytime, sometimes it's worse. I have had to replace the flex disc hoping that was the problem, but not. I am thinking I should adjust the modulator, but then what happens to the shifts per the adjustment when the car heats up? I have read here that the modulators especially in this particular model are somewhat faulty, or were recalled. Are the symptoms I am having a definite sign that I should get a new modulator, or will an adjustment help? I purchased a manual via internet, waiting to arrive, hopefully this weekend I can tackle the issue, well maintained car, would love to fix this...

When cold there is a solenoid that cause shift delay of the transmission. This is to warm the engine and cats and tranny up more effiecently and quickly. Although mine does not shift that much harder cold than when warm. Which could be due to a slight vacuum leak somewhere on yours. When I fixed all my vacuum leaks and replaced my rubber intake boot all my hard shifts and hard starting issues went away. Tranny shifts smooth as glass now, well I did the head gasket too! But my intake boot being replaced is what made the most diference and fixed all my problems.

It is between the AFM and the actual throttle body. A rubber boot is on the bottom of the AFM unit and connects the AFM to the actual throttle body. AFM is Aif Flow Meter!
