To replace or not timing chain?

Folks,

A friend has a 1999 c230 with a kompressor, he was wonder if it has a chain or belt type and what is the interval of replacement? Could some body elaborate on this?? Thank you very much.

Alex

It has a timing chain and there's no interval for replacement. A competent tech should inspect the timing chain system periodically and determine if the chain, guides, tensioner, etc. need replacement. With proper oil changes the timing chain should be good for over 200K miles in that car.

The 100K mile replacement recommendation is for the M116 and M117 V8s, and I've heard it to be 100-150K miles. V8 timing chains have severe inflections/direction changes that cause more wear on the chains.

I don't know what the word is on the M112 and M113. If you can project evolution, the M119 chain recommendation is something like 150-200K miles. I expect the newer V engines have chains that last even longer.

The rule of thumb on these engines is 100K miles or ten years time, whichever comes first. The chains seldom fail but the plastic chain rail guides get brittle after time and and break dropping into the chain and causing the chain to jump time resulting in severe engine damage. Be sure to replace those plastic pieces whenever doing a chain replacement.
