Crazy idea: 500E fuel tank in other 124s?

Greetings ShopForum,

Sounds like a non-sequitur question, but I assure you it is not...

Hopefully have a rear differential swap in the near future of my 95 E420. I am not as much concerned about loss of fuel economy as loss of range. This crazy idea hit me one day: Find a larger fuel tank from another W124, and enjoy roughly the same highway cruising range as before. The 500E made up for the economy hit with a larger fuel tank -- 90L/23.5 gal versus 70L/18.5 gal in the 400E. (Part # for the 500E tank is A 124 470 95 01, compared to # A 124 470 03 04)

Has anyone installed the larger fuel tank in their .034/other W124? Does anyone know whether it would even fit a regular (not widebody) 124?

Thanks in advance,
-DM

Don't see any reason why it wouldn't fit, though you'd probably need to purchase the fabric trunk panel and metal liner that goes on the trunk side of the tank, for the best fit. probably have to drill and tap new holes for the mounting of the liner, too.

Cheers,
Gerry

Wink

The 1995 E300D also came with that tank & they have a crusing range around 800 mi.

In Europe and most markets, among the long list of extras you could order for the W124, you could specify a factory fitted LARGER tank for most models, as long as you paid the extra price.

I would suppose this larger gas tank is the one used as standard on the 500 E.

MB provides the larger driver's side kidneys for an extra fee...installation not included!

Sweet. That would give me like a 600 mile range.

Why is it that only the Germans recognize the value of a large fuel tank?
The US is so much more spread out, and domestic models often have like a 300 mile range. Makes no sense.

The Autobahn, perhaps?

The Lexus LS 430 has a 22.2 Gallons fuel tank standard.

Appreciate the feedback, everyone. Happy belated b-day by the way, Doc!

Interesting enough, the 90L tank in the 95 E300D is yet another part number in the latest EPC: # A124 470 00 04. If someone finds the best fitting part at a decent price, let me know.
