1989 300TE Dash Vent Problem

The middle slat in drivers dashboard vent has come off and is loose inside the vent box. This is the slat that was connected to the rubber piece that slides back and forth and controls the movement of all the slats. Is there an easy way for me to be able to access the loose slat (i can grab it with needle nose pliers to no avail) and re-attach it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
