Question Interchangability of rear axle assemblies

I own a 1957 220S Cabriolet. It has a clunk in the differential. My mechanic says that we would be best advised to exchange my rear axle (hub to hub) with another car with a good assembly. The question is, what year model will interchange with my car? I can aquire a 1963 220S (finback) for parts. Will this car's rear axle interchange with mine? any othe suggestions are appreciated.
