juddering clutch solved

I know it may be of interest to only a few forum members, but the juddering clutch takeup when cold in my 87 300E was completely cured by replacing the engine mounts.

so smooth its scary

Certainly of interest to me. I have posted on many occasions regarding issues with the clutch on my '90 190E-2.3 Sportline. I still suffer some clutch shudder when it is cold. I had not considered engine mounts since receipts not long before I purchased the car just over two years ago showed new engine mounts. It has not travelled a great distance since. I do however get a little engine vibration at idle which can be a sign of worn mounts. Maybe I should have a closer look at the mounts. I am of the belief though, that neither clutch shudder nor vibration at idle is normal. New mounts may mask the problem however I believe something else is the true cause of either condition. Thanks for the info.

Hey, thats what mine does

I was thinking the clutch shifted or it got oily from a leaky rear main seal.

I guess I'm in the market for motor mounts now.

I've just been through the whole driveline thing, replaced tranny mount (which was completely shot), front flex disk, diff mounts and rebuilt diff.

Changing the engine mounts really topped it off. I was resigned to doing the clutch itself next but now problem solved. Wouldn't have thought they were the cause myself but twisted logic is that the engine may have settled when it wasn't running, ie no torque. Who knows?

btw, only one of my mounts was really bad, under the exhaust. The other was probably serviceable.

my mechanic pointed out that the engine was shaking on startup, on the first couple of revs, although I certainly wouldn't have associated this with the vibration mentioned in other threads on this subject. He also leant on the open door while the engine was idling to check vibration, apparently you're not supposed to feel anything if the mounts are OK.

hope this helps
