How much damage am I looking at to replace the evaporator on a 1994 E320? I have been given a $2700 price by a German imports specialty shop that has always done good and reasonably priced work for me in the past.

Unfortunately, the evaporator is BURIED within the bowels of your dash...meaning that the whole kit n' kaboodle needs to come out in order to gain access to the evaporator core.
I believe the shop labor time for dash removal and evap replacement is around 16 hours! A new core is somewhere around $700. The OEM core was aluminum and prone to leakage. The replacement is copper (which is what the factory should have used in the first place)! Some here have done this themselves and posted pics. These guys have bigger brass kahoonas than I to take on such a task! I had mine replaced at the dealership for about $1800 nearly five years ago. Paid for via extended warranty.

Did that in January of this year. Technical and time consuming, but not that hard. Saved BIG bucks, and my wife told me today that the A/C was freezing her out.

Isn't the 96 E320 and the 94-95 E320 basically the same car? | jrmd01 | Off-Topic Discussion | 8 | 08-26-2004 12:12 AM |
