I've never seen a hitch rated over 2000 lbs for these cars. I wouldn't go much over a ton.

My 89 300te has a hitch, used it to tow a small ski boat. Rarely exceeded 1500 lbs. Never exceeded 2000 lbs. Hitch sticker said 2000, hitch documentation said 1500. My head gasket started leaking oil at #6 after one hot summer of towing the boat to the lake.
