Great forum. My first post. Have a 2001 E-430 with 4k miles. Have noticed a relatively loud humming under rear seat(driver side)with engine running. Sounds like an electric fuel pump. While it's a warranty item..am curious if anyone has any idea on cause before taking it into dealer.

Hummer?

macavity, if you had a '86-'9? and the noise was on the right(passenger side) I would say it was the vacuum pump for the locking system. But in 12 years I've never heard mine.My fuel pumps(yes pumps, my 300E has 2)are on the right side outside underneath in an enclosure. Yes while it is in warrantee have it checked out. Happy Trails Beep Beep from Houston.

Well......I'll be the first to tell you, someone has to

The reason for the humming is......it doesn't know the words!

Sorry, couldn't resist

I have MY2001 E55 and I also have noise under rear seat that cycles every 1 second or so. Was told by dealer, after they heard it, that it is vacume pump. I have appointment to fix along with front bummer broken on racoon.

Yes there is a pneumatic pump under the seat, shouldn't run unless the is a bleed from the lumbar seats or the engine isn't running. Then it provides vacuum assist. Also runs for central locking.
