Unhappy Starter motor will not even turn

Hi,

My E280 1996 (w210) will (occasionally) not start. The starter motor does not turn at all (completely dead).

Normally after several attempts the starter decides to turn and hence the engine starts.

The battery is new and I do not experience any other electrical problems
Could it be the ignition switch?

Thanks in advance,
immid

Tap the starter the next time it won't turn. It will probably start. If it does, then you will know that the starter is bad.

If your battery passes a load test, you may have issues with the starter solenoid.

In some cases it is, but you're going to have to pull the whole unit(starter+solenoid) anyway.

You could replace the solenoid, reinstall and have the armature(starter piece) go bad a month or two later.

If you suspect the starter system, remove it and take to a reputable elect. rebuilder in your area.

This isn't the sort of job you want to do over again.

Could also be the neutral saftey switch -- try neutral instead of park (and if it works, also try new shift rod bushings, they are MUCH cheaper than a starter....).

If it's the solenoid, replace the starter.
