'92 300SE Inline 6 AC Problem!

Hi, everyone!

I am hoping someone here could point me in the right direction. I have a 92 300SE 6 cylinder and my air conditioning control won't get any air blowing through the vents. I suspect the blower or a relay. In the winter the blower was blowing very weak. When I turn on the air conditioning inside the car, I can hear a drop in revs in the engine indicating that the compressor has been turned on and is working. But I get no air blowing in at all. I've checked the fuse in the trunk and it is O.K.

I am mechanically inclined and have fixed various cars before. I don't have a manual so I have no idea where there might be an A/C relay that I can replace/check. Is my blower shot or it is a relay that's failing to start the blower? How do I access the blower and where is it located? I see nothing under the dashboard and nothing in the engine compartment.

How hard is it to replace the blower and what should I expect to pay a dealer to do this work?

On a different note, My clock light went out and so did the light on the temp display on the left side of the controls inside the cabin. I am wondering if that has anything to do with a relay getting burned out. Thanks for any education on this!!

I just ran across your post while searching for info on the identical problem with my 1992 300SE. I went to a technical session this morning at Park Place mercedes in Bedford, TX and the "guru" tech told me to remove the underhood cover for the blower motor and he would check it for me.

His way to do a quick check was to take a working blower motor with the regulator attached and plug it into my blower harness connector. The test blower worked fine. As we are not to utilize the techs at these sessions as our mechanics, I buttoned it up and when I returned home I put 12v to the motor terminals and the motor ran fine, therefore the culprit is the regulator. Are you sitting down? The motor with our club wholesale prices during the first ten days of the month at Park Place, (what a great deal!) were $720.00 for a new motor and $244.00 for a new regulator - plus tax! Install is easy. Hope this helps.

Don't be scared....

DOn't be scared, it's the blower motor regulator. This is a very common problem on the early 140's. I replaced mine about a month ago. Order the part on benzbin.com and you can install it yourself. Just simply remove the cowl cover (about 5 screws) and you will see the blower motor regulator screwd on top of the blower assembly. Simply remove and replace, it should blow like brand new!

P.S. While under there you might want to replace the cabin air filter...

Or order it from our host and help support this forum! You have to admit that it's the best Mercedes forum out there and I'm sure it costs $$$ to keep running

Or check the 30 amp strip fuse before all that, there is a little black box under the hood on the drivers side, near the left front shock tower. It's about the size of a double A battery. flip open the lid and check the fuseable link. It is the MOST common thing to take out your blower motor.

HAHAHHAHAHHA - Hey lyonstexas -your post cracks me up!!!! I used to work for PPMC, there are no "GURU" techs but what you said pretty much sums up that place. "Just plug in new parts till sumfin' starts working again" HAHA I'm not laughing at you at all, it just reminds me of how those guys fix cars.

Melcher,

I have had some off the wall diagnostic garbage at times on both my wife's 97 C280 and my 92 300SE. I spend a lot of time trying to see through the bull but I have to hand it to the parts people, they treat me right. Have to take the wrong part back occasionally though. They are moving in a month to a new facility near the old Coca-Cola plant on lemmon. They tore down the Haggar clothing building for the new site.

Hey Tim,
You know what, you're correct there!! I have never seen a company throw so much money at their clients -especially in the automotive business.
They take a lot of pride in how they treat thier, not customers, clients -as they would say. There are a lot of nice people at Park Place Motor Cars. Even the Owner Ken Schnitzer (sp??) is a totally cool guy. He's a multi-millionair, who gets up early, runs three miles, and then works a full day.
As far as customer service goes, I'm pretty sure there is no better place than PPMC, some may be equal but not better.
I also liked how they had, as you call it, "technical sessions". Where they open thier shop and invite clients in and let them go over thier own vehicle with a foreman or trained tech. How many places would give up a Saturday to do that?
