Unhappy Cruse Control Issues?

I have been reading several forums on the common problem with the older model MB cruse control. I understand that 9 times out of 10 it is the amplifer, and the electical connections need to be resoldering. I just wanted to know what the symptons were. At times when I am driving the cruse just drops out. and sometimes will not engauge. There are times that it stays on for miles. and other times it will not engage at all. Dose this sound like the Amplifer? And the common cause is loose connections which need to be resoldered? This is in a 1988 300 SE. Thanks Love the forum....

Sounds right to me. Mine would surge too. Resoldering my board does indeed fix the problem, as my car cruises sweetly now. It is possible to get the board out without taking the metal enclosure it resides in out, which is much more difficult. You have to pry the enclosure tabs back once you have the enclosure out of the car anyway. I didn't find the need to take the enclosure out of the car at all.

I have posted my experience resoldering that board on the forum before. If you can't find it, email me at jtsdirect @ hotmail.com and I'll walk you through it.

Thumbs up Thanks.......

I would like to thank everyone who gave me advice on repairing my Cruse Control Amplifier. I was a little scared at first plus getting my 6 foot 280 lbs under the dash board was not an easy. After removing the component, I removed the card from the casing and proceeded to resordier all of the connections. When you look at it you will not think that something may be loose. It look new to me but then again my car is in excellent shape. By the way no one told me about putting the screw back in … it was a nightmare. Replaced, tested, everything works fine. Thanks again to all who responded and to the Forum. I have another quagmire for you but not just yet……. Here is a couple of helpful links that some one gave me that I will pass on to you guys also… thanks…it is nice to cruse again.

I did as "Q" said and had my amp out, resoldered, back in and tested in around an hour.

The cruise has gone from non-existent to perfectly smooth.

I need to do this on my W201. My Cruise works sometimes, but the longer it is on the worst it gets. Some days I can cruise for miles with everything perfect. One day I had the cruise set at 75 and then all of a sudden it accelerated to 95 before I hit the cancel button. I wanted to see how far it would go or if it would stop. Well it didn't and I was running out of room. I assume this is the amplifier causing this since I have a new sensor on the speedo and new switch stalk as well. The only other things I can figure are the amplifier or the servo and I doubt the servo would do that. Will have to rip the unit out one of these days.

Post My lesson learned "Q" You are the man....

Yes I admit I was a little quick on the repair... I sent Q a note but did not wait for the email to return. After getting the amplifer out I noticed how easy it would have been to adjust the casing to remove the card. Take my advice and use Q's advice. Don't take out the case but be precise in soldering your connections.

As for your auto accelerating.... I don't know the answer to that one... I wish you luck and it would be nice if the amplifer is the cause. But I could not tell you....

By the way... my Cruise is solid as a rock now.....Thanks for all the help .....
