W123 Rear Wheel Bearings

I am currently replacing the final drive shafts in my 300D. There is nothing about repacking the rear wheel bearings. I figured since I have the axels out, now would be a good time to do the job also. But I also heard that you dont fool with them until they go out. So if thats the case, can you easily access the bearings with the axels in there or will they have to pull the axels anyhow and double the work?

The left side is making a bit of noise when I rotate the hub. The right side is dead quiet.

I know I need the special tool(socket) to dissassemble the wheel bearing assembly. I am wondering if I can take it apart, repack the bearings and replace the seals. I am wondering if all the talk of replacing the bearings and the races are what the big difficulties are or can a person just repack the existing bearings and replace the inner and outer seals without worrying about all the preload stuff and crush seals?
