R129 Hardtop Rubber Seal Replacement
Currently, my hardtop on my 1991 500SL leaks a bit of water on the passanger side where the hardtop meets the corner of the windshield.
I can see exactly where the leak is becuase theres some mildew growing. I consider myself pretty technical, but I'm not very car saavy (somthing i'm trying to get into), so I my question is how easy is it to just replace that seal -- I see that the front seal is screwed down onto the hard top. If someone else has already done this, can you post some descriptive instructions on how to do it? I have a really good mechanic, so should I just leave it to him, or is it something I could accomplish easily? Thanks all in advance! ~drew

I think the seal on the hardtop is all one piece, and it is held in by brackets and friction. My hard top leaked a bit at the same point. I cleaned both surfaces really well, and then applied some 3M silicone lubricant. This stuff works great to refresh your seals, but don't get any on paint or glass as it is hard to get off. There are little drains in there and they can get clogged, so keeping it clean is important. I put the description of work on how to repair this common problem for the 129 chassis here. I hope it helps! Happy Benzing!
