sunroof seal

howdy everyone. wondering if anyone knows about the sunroof seals on 1985 300TDT. i am wondering if the rubber and the brushes are designed to keep the water out completely or just to allow it to seep rather then drip into the drain pipes. my side brushes need replacing, but i am wondering if it is really necessary if warer will get in there anyway.

I also think i need to have the windshield re-sealed because i think that is where the water is coming into the car (the wall above/next to the hood latch which then drips on the parking brake). I thought about getting some food coloring and mixing it with water. then pouring it where i think the leak is to test it. anyone tried anything like this

The sunroof seals are ment to keep the wind noise down, the gutters around the sunroof take car of any water.

Be carefull I put a new seal in mine and now it will not pop up without my help. The new seals are tight and need some time to wear in.

The seals have a up and down and a front and back. I had them replaced on my 92 140 body ( slight rust spot in the corner), and they did a terrible job, even cutting out a portion when there was excess. Get the proper one from MB, lube it slightly, start in the corners and work it in. It would not hurt to clean the groove in the roof. I used a little seam roller from a wallpaper kit to seat it, and it is perfect, did not need to wear in. The drains are meant to get rid of water that seeps thru but will not handle a deluge. (I did get the body shop to supply me with a brand new one in a bag, the cost is $150)

Mine is an OE seal as well.

I put it in just like the original, ie not upside down and facing the right way. However I had to cut out about 3/4 of an in and it still doesn't fit 100%. I am not to happy with the way it came out but I am in no hurry to cough up another $68 at the dealer for a second one. Maybe later this year after it bothers me more.

I played with the seal for 2+ hours but just couldn't get it to fit perfectly.
