mid-grade fuel
Reduced costs??
I have a friend who burns mid grade unleaded in his 96 S320. He says there is no reduced performance or pinging. Would this be a good for my 95 S420? I know the manual say premium. Thanks for input. |

I am having no trouble with mid-grade in south carolina. I am told we have "good gas" here.....
I have also been told that when it gets warmer, I will likely have to switch back to premium.... I actually noticed a slight increase in gas mileage...about 1/2 mpg...

Use whatever fuel grade/octane that does not cause your engine to PING under a load. In my 1995 SL320 with a M104 engine I have been using 87 octane with no problems for 6 years. In my 86 M103 engine it will only take 91 octane , so go figure

Your '95 has a knock sensor that will retard the timing and keep the engine out of detonation. Your '86 does not.
I use 87 PON durilng the winter and have no detonation, but as temperatures warm up, there is some transient detonation, especially if I short shift and get on the throttle quickly. I think it's just a lag in the vacuum advance pulling back, but I can "drive around" the problem by shifting at higher revs or feeding the throttle in at a slower rate. Duke |

I have been running Reg 87 Oct since I got the car a yr ago! It is the 4.2 V8! The day I bought the car I filled with Reg and I had to drive it back home and climb a Mtn. pass! The car never pinged or felt down on power. I do put in a can of SeaFoam in the tank once a mo. to clean up the sys. After a yr. still runs smooth as silk!
