A/C on a '03 E320

I have a '03 E320 that blows cold air (about 49 F) on a warm day (80 F) from the center vent when the A/C switch is in the off position and operating in the manual mode.. The dealer tells me this is normal because the car is equipped with a variable dissplacement compressor and is never turned fully off. The car does't have climate control like the E500's. Any ideas?
