Ouch...Busted Axle 300TE

Our '91 300TE attempted to kill us the other day: Step on the gas to cross a busy road, just launched and BANG! stopped dead in the road w/ semis beaing down on us brakes quealing and horns blaring! Jump out and push back down the hill. Get pulled home and after brief speculation on what goes "bang" and stops you dead w/ the motor running and the trans shifting into gear we found the image below.
I've never seen one do this...what amazes me the most is that there is no "fresh" metal where a break would have happened, all of it is corroded..(for some reason it looks fresh in the pic, but not in person at all).
Oh well, New one just arrived from Fastlane and we're doing the wheel bearing while we're in there as we had to do the other side last winter.

Just thought I'd share...

Cheers,
-Matt

yikes! I'm guessing the salted roads caused the corrosion?
