Cheapy AC retrofit DOES work- FOR NOW .
Thank you to all that responded to my previous post regarding the same AC questions. Yes my question regarding using a modified shop vac to evacuate was well…. as I posted very naïve – however that’s why I asked and now I know. With regards to the kit working for one to two years and then – as warned -- my AC system will crash and I will face major $$$ repairs. I think that’s great if I can defer paying $2000 or more for even one summer season let alone two. When and if my AC stops working then I will just have to join the AC less club and use my sunroof ( that now works thanks to Peter of this board) and windows and a large ice coffee during the drive home.

i have been filling my brother's Volvo yearly in Toronto with a can R134 obtained in US without licence.(sold in Walmart for $5)
While in Canada, this is not sold over the counter. Every year,it works for one to two months(the extent of the summer period),then next summer recharge.Better than paying some AC guy at Volvo dealership 1000$. As my myself,I have a sunroof and joined the AC-less club

These guys make it seem like a mystery. (long)

With regards to these guys make it seem like a mystery --I believe everybody deserves to make a good living BUT as an example - when I recently got the front brake pads replaced at a local automotive chain - I watched and was speaking with the mechanic while he slipped them on in much less then half hour. At the service counter they presented me with a bill for $ 89 for the aftermarket pads plus $265 for labour. When I questioned the service rep. he started with the mystery of how complicated the job is and the that the mechanic had to lubricate, adjust, calibrate etc.- I was wearing a suit and tie at the time and he was clearly assuming I knew nothing about repairs - I asked to speak to his boss and got the same story - I told them that obviously they were nice guys but knew nothing about cars and that they were more suited for a job at a clothing store. Then of course the store manager was called who called the mechanic who backed up my story and the bill was adjusted down to one-hour labour. WOW I wonder how many little old ladies, young woman, and technically challenged persons are taken advantage each and every day by these smoke and mirror MYSTERY explanations. I also would like to make it crystal clear that I am not blaming the Mechanics but the fault lies with the greediness (dishonesty?) of the service centres. |

There is ABSOLUTELY NO mystery about refrigeration. That said, it is NOT simple. There is plenty of good information that you can read and study to learn how to properly service your a/c system. You can either study and do it right, have someone else fix it for you or you can patch it up with a band aid (One of the suicide kits like Tino used) and have it working "FOR NOW."
The keywords in the title of this thread are "FOR NOW." Have a great day, |

Take a look at EPA Test. More than you ever wanted to know and, for $15US, a license to buy R12, the good stuff. Section 609 is the one for automotive AC.

Like they say...you can fix it right now...or you will be fixing it again soon...any halfway fix is not going to last.

R12 is harmful to the environment.

If you want to prevent atmosphere pollution, find a way to stop volcano's. They cause a hundred times more damage to the ozone layer than R12.

Freeze-12 is 80% R134A. Why would a person put something that was 80% R-134A into an R-12 system?
Yeah...they have a "special" tap you have to buy. Think it's around $25.
