Looking for information on two problems; 1) Gas gauge reads incorrectly when you fill the tank. It reads 3/8 of a tank when it is full. and 2) Oil pressure gauge will go to zero while driving, a second or so later its goes back to 30. Does not occur all the time and no oil light.

Are these common with this car?

Thanks

Larry

Do a search and you will probably find out a lot of info. But, the gas gauge could be a fuel sending unit corrosion issue and the oil gauge could be a oil sending unit problem

As said before, seems like a problem with both sending units. The behavior you describe on both gauges is not normal.

First of all, I would strongly advise you to do a full service on the car (even if you have records that it had be done recently). Change engine and transmission oil (yes, transmission oil, and do use ONLY the M-B approved oil), all filters and possible do change the accessories belt and change the rear diffferential oil.

Transmission oil should be changed only at a dealer or at competent M-B mechanic with all the proper tools to do so.

problem returns....

Replaced the fuel sending unit and the gauge read correctly for 1 tank full. After refilling, guage registered 3/4, later after driving for a while and restarting, it again read full...... but later went back to 3/4.

Any ideas?

Final closure on gas gauge problem

As i indicated in my threaded notes, my '97 S320 gas gauge was in accurate and after replacing the sending uint the problem only returned after my second fill up. I am happy to report that the problem has finally been resolved, as it turns out I had a bad connection at the instrument panel with the small connector. This was dicovered as a last result by removing the panel to inspect the connection prior to taken it in to the dealership.

Thanks for all of the other suggestion.... This is a great site for DIY's...
