Please help, '98 C 280---Crank position sensor--which one?

"Vehicle: 1998 Mercedes Benz C 280
Part: Reference Sensor
Select product

Image Product Fits
Reference Sensor
Position : @ flywheel
Interlock : double
Engine: -30 370998
Reference Sensor
Crankshaft position
Interlock single

Engine: -30 370998"

I need a new "CPS" from what I can tell the '98 c280 used 2 diffrent ones?? How do I tell which one of the above sensors is the correct one. Where do I find my engine #? (I'm guessing that "Engine: -30 370998 & Engine: -30 370998" are engine #'s because it's not even close to my vin#. Thanks in advance.............ps I'm talking about the sensor that is located on the back of the engine near the tranny bell housing. Car intermittantly dying/ and intermittantly not starting etc........

Yes, it's called the reference sensor, you need to check your eng number for correct part.

The last 8 digits of the engine number will either be lower (prior) <30370998 or greater than (post) >30370999.

The engine number will be printed on the data card on the back page of your service book. Should start of as 112.920########.

Exclamation

Most 1998-99 engines use the "early" part 003-153-95-28 or 003-153-96-28!

=Thank you--both. I don't have my orig. service book. Is there another way I could verify my engine #? ( possibly by getting my "VMI"?). MBDOC, are you saying that most '98's use the double or single interlock?

Yes, It's pre index number, in other words the last 8 digits of your engine number is a smaller value (pre) 30,071,340 to the index number 30,370,998.
It's the first sensor,
position:@flywheel
interlock:double

Done, and it runs--thanks again you two. Took all of 10 min. to swap the sensor out. Somthing odd tho', I pulled the old ref. sensor out and just the end of it was covered with a silver paste like substance. Should that be there?

The end of the sensor should be clean, the paste you are referring to has been applied to the ring gear at some stage to rectify a problem that the m112 engine suffers from (stops cranking).

Who ever applied the paste may have inadvertently applied to much, and excess paste has wound up on the sensor.

Just wondering if the paste could be what caused my ref. sensor to fail. It appears to be metallic?? Also what kind of repair would this paste be used for and what exactly is it?
