86 300E Tool Rental in So. Calif.?
Does anyone have the following tools they'd be willing to rent for a W124?
I need the proper coil spring compressor tool, the subframe/differential mount bushing tool, front and rear lower control arm bushing remover/replacer tool and the rear wheel bearing remover/replacer tool. I would need it for approx. one month and would be willing to leave any reasonable deposit. Looking for someone local to avoid shipping costs. I'm in Monrovia, just east of Pasadena. Thanks, Gary |

If no one in your area makes an offer, try this site. They are located in Calif. and rent specialty tools for MBs.

Thanks for the reply.
I'm aware of Performance Products, they're only about a 30 min. drive from me. The problem is that they only rent for 2 weeks and I don't think I can get the job finished in that time frame and I'm trying to avoid renting it twice at $55 a pop. The only one of the three they rent out is the spring compresor, the other two I'd have to buy and they're not cheap. Gary |

I just rented from Performance Products and they rent for 3 weeks.
As for the rear wheel bearings, I removed both rear axle carriers and took it to a machine shop. They removed the old bearings and installed the new bearings I supplied them. You may be able to take the rear control arms t and the rear axle carrier to a machine shop to get the wheel bearing and the control arm bushings R & R'd. I might just cost around the same as renting the tools for the two jobs and in the process save a lot of aggravation.

hs_300e,
Thanks, I'll check the price with my local shop. Btw, did you need a special puller of any sort to remove or replace the rear driveshafts? Are they a tight interference fit or can I knock them out with a soft-face mallet or a brass drift? Gary |

I don't recall them being very difficult to remove from the axle carrier. I may have used a bearing puller to remove the axle carrier from the drive shaft.
