Question 89 300E-removing center console-need help

My driver's side window went down but won't go up. The switch in the center console doesn't "click" when I push it in the 'up' position. I assume the switch is broken. I am going to have my fiance' check the switch before I spend a small fortune taking it to the dealership.

We can't figure out how to take the center console out. Where are the screws?? Does anyone have step by step instructions to remove the console and is it something that can be done by the average Joe or should I take it to the shop & spare my fiance' from dealing with my attitude if he breaks something ;o)

Peel back the carpet toward the rear edge of the wood console. You should see a single philips screw. Remove this, and pull the console up, gently from the rear and then slide it back. If it feels like something in front is holding it down, you can remove the ashtray (two screws inside after removing the ashtray cup) which may make things easier.

You have to remove the black trim piece around the gear shift knob too - which pries up fairly easily. If the wood console is stuck just rock it back and forth - pulling up in the back and around the gear shift knob. You can crack the wood if you bend it too much - but an 89 is probably cracked already anyway. You should be able to swap out switches to find the problem.

Just a quick note on the tranny lever trim piece - the plastic ones come out, the rubber ones don't. My 87 has the rubber, the 91 has a plastic one. Don't know where the cutoff was, but the rubber ones are glued to the wood panel.

On my 190E manual trans, you just disengage and lift up the shift boot, then stick your two index fingers down the rear of the "hole" and lift up. There are two plastic tabs at the rear that should pop out (but it may take a couple of good jerks), then slide the piece back and lift.

You can then disconnect the electrical connector and push the switch assembly up to remove.

You could also go to http://mb.brainers.com and look up the actual procedure for changing the switches. It should be in group 54 electrical.
