86 190E 5spd shifting problems
I have a 86 190E 2.3 with a 5spd, it has developed an issue with the transmission linkage (I hope) like the gears are too close together or having trouble finding the slot. It does not grind though, just a little tempermental going in. Thanks

The shift levers on the trans are bolted to the syncro hubs, MANY times they work loose. You need to have them checked for tightness.
ALSO at each end of the EXTERNAL shift rods(3 rods) there is a bushing & they do wear out!

My 2.3-16 also has a balky gear shift. I thought the problem was external, ie with the shift rods, bushes, etc but I am now concerned at MBDoc's mention of a possible internal problem.
Is the loose internal shift lever problem limited to the standard 2.3 five speed or does it carry over to the 2.3-16 Getag trans? Also will replacing the nylon bushed shift rod ends with spherical Heim type ends tighten up the gear change and reduce the balky-ness? Thanks & regards, bobf |

A couple of years ago mine got balky going into first gear. All that was needed was the two dollar bushing on the shift lever end of the 1-2 shift rod.
All the other bushings were okay. The dealer even had the bushing in stock as it is apparently the same one used for autos, and it's a common replacement item. Inspect all the bushings on the linkage, renew them as required, and go from there. Duke |
