I'm an idiot!!! 300ce window prob - PICS!
Hopefully the title of this thread got everyone's attention! lol
My 1990 300ce doors are starting to reflect the car's age. They were sagging, so I went ahead and adjusted the hinges and striker plates so that they align properly. Of course, this means that I had to adjust the windows as well... They were rolling up to high. So I followed the service manual's instructions, which says to loosen the following two nuts, which limit the upward travel of the window (after removing the door panel, of course). No problem there. The problem occurred when I tried to tighten the damn things. I really didnt exert much pressure, but I broke the bolt clear off of the first one. I was pissed at myself, but I really didn't think it should've broken. So then I was even more cautious when I tried to tighten the other bolt. This is the part where the "idiot" thing comes in. I sheered the other bolt in half too! I couldn't believe it! Here is a pic of the parts that I broke: So, that leads me to my question. As you can see on one of the units in the pic above, the bolt that broke is welded onto the back of the L-bracket. These brackets do not have part numbers on them. Is there any hope for me to find replacements? Thanks for reading. I may have to try and salvage some from the junk yard... |

Call the Parts Department at your local MB dealer. The part should be available in a day or two. Better to use a new part than have a repeat with other used parts from a salvage yard. Getting back to your door adjustment ... can't imagine that the previous owner would have compensated for slightly sagging doors by adjusting the windows. Perhaps you raised the doors too much. I recall making a slight adjustment to the fore/aft position of the driver's door on our 1991 300CE and the window was fine.

Trust me, it really bothered me that a previous owner would've done that. But I have no other explanation for it. The doors were sagging quite noticeably... at the rear door jamb it was at least 3/8" too low. But the window sealed perfectly. I adjusted the doors so that they are as perfect as I can get them, and the doors won't shut with the windows rolled up all the way. So I have no other explanation other than a previous owner adjusting the windows to compensate...

Just a quick follow-up. The dealer easily ordered these parts for me. Although they're $15 each, which seems steep for L-brackets!! I'm not terribly surprised though.
