W126, Starter Noise

I just replaced the transmission in my '89 560 SEL. Everything is working fine except the starter makes a loud "scream" every time we start it. I installed the starter using the metal dust cover and two metal shims as it came out, so I'm stumped.

Anyone know what I did wrong?
