Lambda Tower Replacement
I tried to replace one on a 190E, but isn't not as simple as I thought.
Do you need a special tool/machine to take the knittings out and put new ones in, there is no screws there... Would any mechanic be able to do that or should I go with the dealer to get it done. I already go the entire fuel/air intake module out.. (I thought that there will be nuts on the inside of that thing) |

You need to carefully drill them out! Cover the AFM with a cloth to keep bits of metal out of the intake. Then the screws just screw back in and snap the head off.

Just tap along the outter edge of the head with a center punch and hammer, in a counter clockwise manner and they will unscrew.
They have blue loctite on them and wont be loose enough to unscew them with your fingers for a while, but they'll come out. If you drill off the head, the screw shaft will be next to impossible to remove because of the loctite.

tapping with the center punch and hammer, might work will give it a try. So i guess that is the same way to put them back on.

Actually, I'd replace them with slotted machine screws to make it easier. That's what I did, as there's simply not enough room to get a socket or wrench around hex bolts, in that area.

Thanks for all your help, I got it done wheew.
I basically broke the old lambda tower to pieces with the center punch and the hammer so that only the two screws where sticking out. Then I screw those out with pliers. Now screwing the two screws back in with the new lambda tower in place was more tricky, as you said there is no room for pliers or a wrench to grab those suckers and twist them. I stuck a screwdriver between the screw and the lambda tower "wall" (sideways) and twisted the screws in that way, worked like a charm. O \ ( ^^^ lambda tower wall ^^screw driver using the tower wall as levage and pushing the screw and and twisting it ^screw head |
