I know of several people in my neck of the woods who have had good luck with the simple std. tranny, roll-up-your-own-windows variety Saturn.

Similar experience to maybe a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla.

Keep clean fluids-n-filters in them and you'll go far.

If it's used, then it's hard to say. All depends if the previous owner did what I just mentioned.

Hello- I owned a Saturn in the past and here's what I can tell you.
The original Saturns were relatively reliable cars. They were built simply, and for a cheap car, who can argue with dent free panels? The problem with saturns however, is the engines. They burn oil. I changed the oil in this one religiously at 3k or lower yet it started burning signifigant oil at about 70k, this got worse fairly quick. I soon realized this was a pretty common problem with Saturns, and aquaintance of mine informed me he had replaced the engine on his already (50k) due to low oil pressure seizing the engine.
If this is a second generation saturn, say 95 an up(?) Forget it, not only will you be smoking but you'll be in the shop all the time for the rest of the car.
Anyway, have the compression tested and look for sludge and oil burns on the dipstick. Otherwise, it could be a nice reliable car..

No way does a Saturn come even close to a Honda, or Toyota. Saturn's are simply junk.

It's a Chevy Cavalier. Same engine/tranny, slightly different shaped body panels. But at the end of the day, it's still just Chevy.

get an old toyota celica

If you need a beater car, get an old toyota that has been maintained. Mine 86 Celica GTS is still running as strong as the day I bought it with now 206k. Original engine, no oil consumption, no coolant consumption. Clutch was replaced at 77k, still works fine. A/C still work, but was repaired 7 years ago. Second timing belt recently done. Just did the steering rack and new shocks in front by myself. Parts cheap. Now drives great. Can't beat an old toyota. The power train doesn't seem to break.

I am getting away from MBZ. Cost too much to fix even the little things. Nice cars though, but has to be religiously maintained. Just bought a Lexus RX330 to replace my ML 320. I have to say, it is a much smoother ride with a lot of amenities and safety features. And may I say reliable.

A great deal on a used car is the early 90's Dodge Colt/Mitsubishi Mirage. You can get them for almost nothing and they are great cars and that little engine is very torqy (OK that's not really a word) and gets good mileage. Just find one that isn't beat to death. I had a '90 hatchback for a while and really thought it was great for the money (1500.00 in 1999). It was the 1.5L I think or maybe 1.6L.

My mother had a '95 Saturn and it had a cracked head and that was typical for that year. And she babied it and did dealer everything, and she barely goes above 55. Before that it got recalled for new valves.

Look at the Mazda Protege. They are the darling of Consumer Reports, and are cheap on the used car market.
