Mercedes TACH amplifier

Why is it that the newer (w126) gas cars have the plug in and plastic cover for the tachometer amplifer but there is no amplifer installed. I wonder why mercedes put all these parts in a car that they never used are they for some option I am not aware of. Any one know the answer to this it really keeps me up at night?
