MAF sensor symptoms

Just for future reference, whats the symptoms for a MAF sensor failure on a 99-2000 C230K? How/what will the car act if it goes? Aswell will cleaning it prevent it from going or fix it?

My car has 78 000kms.

Use OE air filters and keep them clean.

. . but from what I've seen at my tech's shop, there's NO symptoms, just the CEL. Car runs fine w/ CEL on.

Funny story; one customer had it pass smog but the CEL was discoved to be on, so they had to fail him. . . but the car was fine. The MAF was replaced ($380+) and the CEL went off. And it passed smog!!

It depends on how bad the sensor is. If the sensor is producing values slightly outside the design range, the only detectable indication is the CEL on. However, if the sensor is further out of spec, you may notice stumbling, poor fuel economy, rough running and any number of other symptoms. On my 2001 VW GTI VR6 I noticed the running problems well before the CEL came on.

Everyone seems to agree on this. And especially don't use those K&N filters which are said to be MAF killers.
