'88 260e strange idle problem

I recently bought an '88 260e and sometimes when hot it will die when I come to a stop. It's better if I shift into neutral first. Other times when I put it in park or neutral it will rev to 1500 to 2200 rpms..It runs great on the highway. thanks..
