Tranny experts - 722.358 rebuild

Okay so my W124 1989 Brabus 3.6 was slipping on the 2-3 shift a few months back so I swapped it out for a second hand unit knowing that it probably wouldn't last too long with the extra torque my motor is putting out. I want to rebuild the 722.358 tranny that came out of the car and reinstall it with the hope of getting another 100,000 mile stint out of it. Checking transmission codes I see that my tranny is a standard 300E unit so it may well be that Brabus did nothing to prepare it for the extra torque it now deals with. Which parts should be replaced in such a rebuild esp. in lieu of the problem? Are there any heavier duty items I can can use in the rebuild from 400/500E trannies? Part numbers would be appreciated. Thank you

I don't have any answers for you, but I'm going to bump this to the top in hopes that someone else will. I'm looking for the same info for my 86 300E. It actually doesn't have a problem yet, but it's got about 155K mi. on it and I'm pulling it out to repair some leaks, so I'd like to know what I can or should replace while I have it out. Can much of the innards be gotten at or put back together without special tools, or are there some special tools that are a must?

Fwiw, I recently downloaded and printed the service manual for the 722.3 & 722.4 transmissions from ATSG.com. Here's a link to the order page. . The price is $25 for either download or hardcopy. I got the download version. It seems fairly complete and well laid out.

Almost all 722.3 trannies are W 4 A 040 transmissions. The 040 is the torque rating. As such and through experience I don't think you will see any difference in parts. The v8 models did have a different orientation of clutches. The only heavier trans would be the 722.362 which is a W 4 A 055. This would come from a 12cyl.

stevebfl,

I don't mean to hijack this post, but what parts should be replaced on a trans with about 155K mi. on it that doesn't have any particular problems other than leaky seals? I don't mind spending a little money on it now to prevent having to pull it again in another 50k mi. What special tools would be needed?

Also, are you familiar with the Shift Correction Package made by Superior Transmission Parts ? Do you think this would be a useful kit to add while the trans is out? Any personal or second-hand experience with this kit?

AS Steve said: that trans will handle the power that a 6 cylinder engine puts out! IN the 722.3 transmissions the only difference is the number of fiber/metal clutches in every clutch pack!

Use OE parts & if you want a HARDER shift then turn up the modulator pressure!

So my 722.358 transmission can defnitely take 220 lb ft torque that my modified engine is putting out provided it is rebuilt using the clutch packs etc. Mercedes will supply me with? Can I use the 722.362 clutches if I wish ? I will turn the modulator up for the moment. I don't mind a hard shift that doesn't slip/flare. Thanks for the knowledge .

AGAIN! the clutches(fiber & steel) are the same in ALL 722.3_series. The heavier cars that generate more torque have a different drum that allow for MORE of the same firction discs.

That trans rebuilt properly should take that torque without any problem!

Talking

Just to say thanks to the advice on this board I was adjust the vacuum modulator (lots of threads on this topic ) on my current transmission a few notches clockwise which seems to have gotten rid of the 2-3 flare without harshening the shifts. Tranny had new fluid/filter ~3000 miles ago when I installed it and I topped it off with 200ml of fluid that it needed (while the oil was hot immediately after a 30 min drive) a couple of days back. No sign of leaks when I did the adjustment either so hopefully the 2-3 flare will leave me for a few years at least!

That shift kit looks interesting.. I'm hoping to find out more info from the manufacturer.

I'll post my findings for anyone who may be interested

Jonathan,

I called Superior Transmission Parts a couple of days ago to find out whether their kit would be suitable for my trans. It has a somewhat harsh 1-2 shift, but otherwise shifts ok. I'm pulling it mainly to replace oil seals and replace wear parts after 155k mi. They told me that it would do no harm, soften the 1-2 shift and firm up the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts, and in their opinion, a good peice of preventive maintenance to prevent flaring and slipping.

There are several choices of springs in the kit to soften the 1-2 shift in one of two stages, to firm up the the 2-3 shift in one of two stages and one setting to firm up the 3-4 shift. You can install any one, two or all of these, your choice. They work independently of each other. I had them email me the installation instructions which simply show where the replacement springs go and which sets of springs to use for the level of firmness you want. It does not detail the removal of the valve body from the transmission. These kits are primarily sold to shops and they assume that you know what you're doing.

I'd be happy to email the instructions to anyone who's interested. It's comprised of 2 separate .gif files, about 335kb total. The quality is much better than the versions attached below.

I forgot to ask the price of the kit, so if you call them perhaps you could post that information here.
