Rear window regulator - W126

G'day

The rear R window on my 1988 W126 420 SE is broken. The little plastic/nylon guide which hinges between the relulator arm and the channel along the bottom of the window has disintegrated.

In the Fastlane shop section I noticed a part which looked like this bit (although it appears I can't buy from this site as they don't ship outside the US). Picture from the FastLane catalog.

Now assuming I can get one of these parts over here (AUS), how do you go about replacing it? It doesn't appear that you can get the pin/post (whatever its called) off the end of the regulator arm.

Or is it just easier to replace the whole regulator with a new/2nd hand one?

I think the L rear is about to go soon as its making the same sorts of noises as the R one did before it went and I guess if I'm going to change them I should probably do them all.

Cheers

Window fix...

Dealer will overcharge for those (I paid $3 each - found out later my indie gets 'em for a buck); I've done four of them on my cars.

Search the forums - its been posted on here in both the "correct" method and creative methods.

"Correct" = taking the regulator out of the door (PIA) and putting the new nylon slider in using a press

"Creative" - I drill out the pin (or rivet) from the arm of the regulator; disassemble the new slider (its two pieces) & discard the steel pin. At the hardware you can get a two piece threaded "binder post" that you use in its place - put the female half in the slider and snap it back together. Put the slider in the rail, line up the the hole in the regulator arm and screw the "binder post" together (obviously through the hole).

The creative fix is working well on all four I've replaced. Hint - get steel, not aluminum (alyouminyum as you blokes call it) binder posts. Don't ask me why I know that (allright, you asked - four windows, five repairs - sheared an alum. post on the first fix).

Since you already have the door panel off (or you have x-ray vision), you're halfway done if you take the creative approach. Wrasslin' those regulators out of the door is truly a PIA.

P.S. - those regulators are NOT cheap, nor is it necessary to replace it/them either. The above creative fix will cost under $10 ($4 for parts, $6 for a couple of Foster's)

Good luck
Kevin

Thanks heaps

Now I just have to find those little plastic bits over here somewhere!

BTW, if I'm going to change them all (4 doors) how many do I need?

Cheers

Order some extra, they're cheap. I messed up the first couple I did and had to run out and buy replacements. Its easier with several MB dealers within a couple of miles, but in your case it might be worth the extra cost to have an extra on hand.

I repaired mine with a thick nylon washer (more like a roller) that fits in the channel, and a screw with washers and bushing. All those things are available at a hardware store. The screw end inside the channel must be flat so it doesn't hang up. I admit it would have been easier to just order the part, but its an alternative.

How many you ask?

One per window.

If your dealer wants the rights to your first born, let us know here & I'll mail you some.

Thanks everyone.

I've emailed a couple of places here but if I can't get them I'll gladly take up the offer of an import!!

Cheers

Just to update;

Got hold of the little plastic bits - $15 each from MB Spares in Canberra (I knew our $ was down but you guys get them cheap!!).

Tried the 'creative' solution - went to 4 hardware shops and no-one had heard of a binder post. Oh well.

Settled on the 'correct' solution, removed the regulator, drilled out the bit and then as I don't have a press - hammered the little post 'till it flattened (put a nut behind the plastic bit resting on the metal bit to raise it up while I hammered) sort of correct fix.

Anyway 2 hours per door, and a couple of beers at the end (Crown Lagers, made by the same company but much much better).

Thanks for the help.

Cheers
