Thumbs up drilled and slotted rotors

Hi all, My daughter has a 2000 230 slk and took it in for a brake job. She brought in with her 4 drilled and slotted rotors and ceramic pads. The shop did the job (not MB dealer) and now the car pulsates with medium pressure coming to a stop plus the steering wheel shakes and there is some squeeling too. All the parts are brand new, any idea what the problem can be? Thanks for any info.

John

Either there's something (likely rust) trapped between one of the rotors and the hub, or one of the rotors is warped. Yes, even new rotors can be warped right out of the box.

John, apparently the shop didn't bother to road test the car after performing the brake/rotor work, or if your daughter was braking hard before the new brake pads were bedded in she may have caused the rotors to warp. If the shop failed to mention bedding in the brake pads with conservative stops for a few hundred miles it may be a good idea to look for a more conscientious independent for future work.

The manager road tested the car when done and told my daughter that he wasn't pleased the way it turned out but to try it and if not satisfied bring it back in on Monday. I told her not to make any panic stops until they break in but I'm not too familar with ceramic brake pads.

Also be sure the mating surface on the hubs is extra clean. The disks could be standing off the hub and causing a wave.

Be sure the wheels are torqued evenly. It is important to double-check wheel lug nut tightness after a few miles of driving after replacing disks on older cars.

You're driving a 2000 Mercedes and you try to save a few bucks bringing in your own parts you probably got from some obscure source to a shop that is not professional enough to do the job completely or not do it at all. Sorry, but I think you deserve the hastle and frustration you are experiencing. You've pushed one of my buttons. You want to flash around town in a cool roadster, but you don't want to pay the price. You are slapping a mechanic in the face when you ask him to work for less than he is due. It is an old saying, but it still holds true: you would never go to a nice restaurant and order salad and vegetables and hand the waiter a steak you brought to save some money so why do it to a shop. I've been on this site for along time and have offered advice to many people who enjoy working on their own car or want a second opinion about their mechanics recommendation, but I'm sorry, I have no advice for you.
