98 E320 Defective Device note on Cluster

I switched clusters. The newer unit gives a warning "Defective Device" & ASR/BAS light is lighted at startup. If I press reset, message disappears & all typical odometer /outside temp/ trip meter display & work fine till next startup. Is the cluster actually defective or due I need to go thru a reset process? Or is this unit actually not compatibale for my car?
