The chain should give you plenty of warning before it breaks...if you got noises/rattling then open it up asap. How many miles? and was the chain tensioner ever looked at?...sometimes a fresh one will take away any slop and give you some more mileage before the chain needs replacement,etc...
With good maint the chains are said to go upwards of 200K....my M119 has 147K on the original chain...no problems...but the tensioner was hurting and replaced at 130K. I think today you should get away with the whole shabang for around 2500$ from a competent indy or reasonable dealer. Parts run around 600$. Better than 10,000$+ for a new or re-built motor.
