I'm removing the starter and the bolt heads are so close to the firewall that even if I can get a wrench or crowsfoot on them there is little room to get a grip on or turn the wrench. Is there a special tool for removing starter bolts or do I have to lower the engine?

Although I have never done the job, I presume that you will need to drop the transmission crossmember and lower the trans. It will eventually support itself on the driveshaft. By allowing that amount of drop you should be able to go over the trans with a long extension.
