Windows will not go down on my '87 300TD
I have a 1987 300 TD." ALL "of the windows will not open. I replaced the child safety lock-out switch and was able to open the drivers side front window. I did not try all of the windows after replacing the switch. Just "assumed" everything was OK. The next day I went to put the drivers side window down and it did not work. Neither did any of the other windows. I posted another thread a few days ago,but titled it lock-out switch. I did get a response from that thread suggesting that it might be the relay. Could someone tell me where exactly the relay switch is on the '87 300TD? Also, how do I go about getting to it? I was also told to check fuses, which I did. Everything looked OK there. It seems odd that it would be the fuses given that none of the windows are working. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated! THANK GOODNESS IT IS NOT SUMMER!!

I just had this problem on mine '87 300E last week. None of the window worked. Check your fuse. I believe it is #8 and #9. If you are like me still using the "old" type, change them out to the "new" type. Even it they look OK. I learned my lesson, a $300 lesson to be exact, from the dealership. That's what they did for me. A $1.50 fuse cost me $300.

I tried to purchase"new"type fuses from the local NAPA dealer. They did not know what I was talking about. I ended up purchasing two new fuses that looked like the ones that are in there. They did not work. Can you tell me the difference between the "old" fuses and the "new" fuses?

I think the reference here is to the copper/plastic fuses that are currently being flogged on EBay, as opposed to the aluminum/plastic or aluminum/ceramic ones commonly found in parts stores (and apparantly OEM). The gist of this is that they claim the brass contacts in the fusebox react with the aluminum and corrode, whereas the brass and copper won't. I'm no metalurgist, but Mercedes engineers certainly didn't do us any favors with the design of these things, as you need fingers under 1/2" diameter to get them in and out, so this claim may be valid.
