S320 up shifting problem?

I don't know if this is a trans or engine problem, but I suspect it is engine related.

Here is the problem:
When you floor it the engine will rev up to 4k rpm and pop and not sound right, it will also not up shift until you take your foot off the pedal. When driven normally it is fine. The trans shifts perfect otherwise and it shifts between drive and reverse very quickly. Also the car has a check engine light that may be related I will try to get the code in the next day or so.

The car is a 1997 S320 with 72k miles.

Btw what trans model is this? I suspect it is one of those sealed for life jobs since it lacks a dipstick.
