1994 C280 diagnostic tool

Can someone tell me what diagnostic tool I need to read the trouble codes? Is this car OBDII compliant?

Thanks
Don

Would like the answer to the same question. The '94 is pre OBD-II and I need to run the codes causing my Check Engine light to stay on.

A 94 C280 is partial OBDII compliant, not fully. What do you have for a diagnostic socket? Is there a built-in pushbutton/LED?

C class, 202 chassis do not have flash code retrieve.. they are digital only
This isn't true. My '94 C280 had the 38 pin X11/4 diagnostic connector that I read codes from all the time using your popular led/sw scan tool.

In fact my 202 also had an OBDII connection as well, so I guess mine was a 'hybrid' as deanyel mentioned.

I suppose it all depends on the car's production date but I would imagine that all '94's could be led/sw flash read for codes.

Ok , I think I have it ..
Flash codes can be gotten from some modules at 38 pin connector, but there is no longer flash code to DM module on 202, meaning you can not flash code for CE lamp retrieve or erase/cancel w/flash.. that is done through the digital under dash with a scanner only..

I guess that is where the confusion comes from.
EA,HFM, ATA,CC etc can be flashed , But DM can not .. [ but they still can on the 104 engined E class of the same years]
I guess that is the first change towards full obd2...

If my 1994 C280 is "partially" OBDII compliant does that mean that I can read some of the codes, but not all, using a code reader for OBDII cars (1996 and later)?

Yes . you can read the Emmisions DM codes that trip the CE light.
The other module codes can be gotten fron the 38 pin connector under the hood w/flash tool

My 94 C280 has a build date of 10/93 and I have the OBDII connection port under the steering wheel in the cabin. I haven't bought a code scanner yet, but it is on my wish list. Will I be able to pull the codes from this port?

Yes , the DM codes .
...and with the 38 connector that you also have under the hood, you can access all codes..those can be read w/led flash system, but the CE/DM ones need the scanner..
Auto Zone does then for free..

OK, I was able to get the codes today. They are:

PO134 O2 Sensor Ckt No Activity (Bank One Sensor One)
PO400 EGR Flow Malfunction
PO441 Evap Emission Control System Purge Flow Fault

Any suggestions as to a fix would be appreciated. Cleared the codes and the Check Engine Light is off for now.

If you clear the codes and the Check engine light goes out; then comes on again with DIFFERENT codes, make sure you check the OVP relay. A faulty OVP relay can cause that type of symptom.
